Stoke City 0-1 Blackpool: Josh Bowler wins birthday

Josh Bowler has scored in six of his last eight Championship appearances for Blackpool

Birthday boy Josh Bowler snatched a late winner with his third goal in as many games to earn Blackpool victory at Stoke.

The 23-year-old midfielder exchanged passes with Jerry Yates before shooting past Jack Bonham with four minutes remaining.

It was a rare moment of magic in an austere game, with Josh Maja hitting the post for Stoke in the first half.

But the Potters, who have failed to win in their last five league games, have failed to fight their way through.

Blackpool had the better opportunities in the first half, with Gary Madine going close on several occasions and also setting up Bowler for a chance which was prevented by Bonham.

Nick Powell scuffed a shot wide for the Potters, while Maja nearly opened the scoring just before the break when her attempt bounced off the post.

It was as close as Stoke came to beating Dan Grimshaw, with Mario Vrancic trying his luck from distance and substitute Tyrese Campbell putting his effort away from target.

But Bowler broke the deadlock late when Yates latched onto Madine’s flick and released the midfielder to score – sealing the Tangerines’ first away league win in nine attempts.

The league positions of both teams remain unchanged, with Blackpool in 14th and Stoke one place behind them.

Stoke manager Michael O’Neill told BBC Radio Stoke:

“Despite what we perceive as a lot of good performances, it hasn’t translated into points and results.

“So naturally I feel the pressure, but I’ve been in that position before. I handled a very difficult situation with Northern Ireland and turned it around.

“I still believe that I will make this club better and I will do my job and try to do it the best I can.”

Blackpool head coach Neil Critchley told BBC Radio Lancashire:

“I think in the 90 minutes we were the team that deserved to win the game. We were really comfortable.

“In the first half we were on the foot, with our organization and pressing, then some of the moves we put in – the only thing missing was a goal.

“We had good chances to score and we didn’t take them. The more it’s 0-0 and the more you think you should win the game, the more you don’t want to have that feeling of ‘what if?

“Luckily we didn’t. The second half was more balanced, but we still carried the threat and we won it with a terrific late goal.”
