The summer months are approaching when transfer talks are rife and Sheffield United are already linked with a move for Joe Rothwell.
The Blackburn Rovers midfielder is out of contract this summer and free to leave. The Rovers had a stellar opening a few months into the season, but ultimately escaped playoff contention. And according to Athletic’s Michael Walker, Rothwell is wanted by many clubs, including Sheffield United.
Tony Mowbray is also expected to leave the club, while other key players such as Ben Brereton-Diaz will also be sold, per Athleticism.
Rothwell, 27, came through the youth ranks of Manchester United but never really started at Old Trafford. However, after doing well at Oxford, Rothwell made over 160 appearances for Blackburn. Capable of playing in multiple positions in midfield, Rothwell’s versatility makes him an attractive prospect at Championship level.
The Blades are also reportedly watching Chelsea’s Jake Clarke-Salter. The defender has enjoyed a fine loan spell with Coventry City and is also expected to be available for free this summer.
Our opinion: Joe Rothwell would fit in well at Sheffield United
The names of Rothwell and Clarke-Salter are the sort of players United fans will be happy to be linked with.
We mentioned earlier how Clarke-Salter would be a good signing if we go up or stay low. And you have to say Joe Rothwell would be in the same boat. He has more than proven himself at Championship level and while he may not be a player to take us to the next level in the league above, he would be good in the squad.
Described by local Blackburn journalists as a “mesmerizing” talent with the ball at his feet, Rothwell would certainly be a welcome gift to Bramall Lane this summer.
