Sheffield United 3-3 Blackpool: Jerry Yates scores twice in spirited draw

Sheffield United and Blackpool players clashed after full time, with referee David Webb sending off two other players

Oliver Norwood equalized in the 98th minute as Sheffield United drew with Blackpool in a six-goal thriller with four red cards and a late penalty miss.

Jerry Yates’ second consecutive brace inspired an exciting comeback for Blackpool, who looked set to secure a victory against the Championship leaders.

James McAtee and Iliman Ndiaye put the Blades 2-0 up but Yates scored twice to equalize before Kenny Dougall put Blackpool ahead 3-2.

In a frantic finish, Marvin Ekpiteta and Dominic Thompson were sent off for the visitors before United’s Rhian Brewster missed a penalty.

Blackpool’s Shayne Lavery and Blades goalkeeper Wes Foderingham were shown a red card following an altercation after the final whistle, with the hosts brought down by Burnley, who beat Swansea.

Teenage midfielder McAtee – on loan from Manchester City – opened the scoring with his first senior goal, bursting as Billy Sharp nodded from Tommy Doyle’s cross in his path and stabbed the ball over the line.

Blackpool threatened to respond, with former Blades striker Gary Madine and Yates both closing in, only to have the home side double their lead shortly after.

Doyle was involved again, setting up Norwood to deliver a cross that Chris Maxwell could only parry to Ndiaye, who nodded from close range.

However, Blackpool fought back on the half-hour when United’s defense cleared a corner from half and Callum Connolly’s trick ball to the back post picked out Yates, who sent his header over Foderingham.

The striker then made it 2-2 just before the break, connecting with Lavery’s precise cross to bring in his second goal.

Dougall edged past Blackpool five minutes into the second half, capitalizing on a deflected ball from Charlie Patino to score his first goal of the season.

The match came to a boiling point in the final 15 minutes as Ekpiteta and Thompson both picked up their second yellow cards in quick succession, leaving United with a two-man advantage.

They should have made it count when Yates was ruled for awarding a penalty two minutes from time, but Brewster thundered his kick against the post.

Maxwell made a series of saves and it looked like Blackpool had survived the Blades barrage until Norwood pounced on a half-cleared Doyle corner to score the equalizer eight minutes into added time.

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom:

“We led 2-0 with two good goals but we were sloppy with the ball and then we were punished for some mistakes at the back.

“When they scored a third we had to react and we did. It was probably the best moment of the game for us – all of a sudden we looked like the team we wanted to be.

“Everyone showed real character and real spirit to keep the ball and keep driving and obviously more space opened up when they sent both off for the last 15 minutes. .

“We did more than enough to win, but we can’t claim that because we wasted on the other end.”

Blackpool head coach Michael Appleton told BBC Radio Lancashire:

“It’s easy to say that people have to stay in control.

“But when it happened so quickly and suddenly towards the end of the game, I felt I had to have my say with the referee.

“I had my say because I was disappointed. I thought they [the officials] had a bad day today.”
