Return and player balance – Burnley and Vincent Kompany’s international break plan

Vincent Kompany will spend the international break in the fall as the Burnley boss completes his UEFA Pro course, while the Clarets chief believes his side will benefit from a city break and not a full vacation before returning to action .

The Clarets chief guided Burnley to fourth place in the Championship table after losing just once in their first 10 games. And, after a turbulent start to the campaign which saw 11 fixtures in six weeks, Burnley now have a fortnight off from the league ahead of their trip to Cardiff City on Saturday the week.

And while the players enjoy a few days off before the game in South Wales, Kompany is keen to strike the right balance.

“We try not to give the whole week off, I was a player myself and you do that in miles,” the Clarets chief said. “One day off is the Lake District, two days off is Paris or Spain at a glance, three days off and you’re looking at Greece and Dubai and four days off, It’s LA and Miami! It’s got to be reasonable, so we’ll give them two two-day blocks, if I had to classify it, it’s time for a city break and not a full vacation yet.”

Indeed, there is no rest for Kompany who returns to Belgium for the final phase of a coaching course he initially signed up for in 2020 before the Coronavirus pandemic intervened.

“I still have a few weeks to go and this is one of them,” said the Clarets chief. “Just when you think you can rest, you have to go back to school!”

“I have to catch up and I’m going with an open mind. It won’t be as intense as the first two months of the league, I can imagine!”

The Burnley players were given two separate rest periods following the win over Bristol City, while several went on international duty. Injured players will continue their rehabilitation at Gawthorpe and Kompany is keen to strike the right balance between rest and maintaining the momentum built up in the early weeks of the season.

“It will be measured, you want them to have enough time to recover their mentality. And we have a vacation in two months (when the championship stops for the World Cup), so the main thing is to recharge the batteries and for players to stay physically fit and most players want to stay fit and you have to train to do that.”
