Report: Rovers Under-18s 3-1 Newcastle United Under-18 – News

The Under-18 Rovers produced an impressive performance in the second half, as they came back to victory with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United.

After going two games without a win, Mike Sheron’s side faced additional frustration when they trailed 1-0 at the break, but an inspired retaliation, with second-half strikes from Evan Cunningham , Kristi Montgomery and Joe Ferguson, saw the Rovers secure the points.

A young Rovers side, which included debutant Matty Litherland in the middle of the defense, struggled to find their rhythm in the first half.

Newcastle created the best chances, with Josh Gilchrist heading straight for Felix Goddard and Kyle Crossley shooting into the side net, before the visitors took a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time when Michael Ndiweni came home from a meter after the failure of the Rovers. to erase a cross from the left.

However, the Rovers responded brilliantly after the break, with the impressive Zak Gilsenan carrying the fight. And it was from his free kick in the 52nd minute that saw the hosts tie up, Cunningham leading Gilsenen’s excellent delivery to the back of the net.

Moments later, Cunningham knocked down Charlie Weston at the edge of the area, but he blazed above the bar. However, halfway through halftime, the Rovers doubled their advantage, as Georgie Gent cleared to the left, before removing the ball from the starting line for Montgomery to go home.

The best goal of the afternoon came 18 minutes from when Ferguson let fly 20 yards, with his astonishing arrow strike in the upper right corner.

The rovers threw their bodies over the line late, making brilliant blocks in quick succession to keep Newcastle out, as they came back to victory, allowing them to deviate three points from local rival Burnley in the table and with a chance to finish fifth.
