Scottish FA Cup Semi-Final – Heart of Midlothian v Inverness Caledonian Thistle

Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers prepare to be disappointed in their pursuit of John Souttar, who is expected to join Rangers from Hearts.

Sheffield United and Blackburn had shown interest in the 25-year-old, while Middlesbrough had also shown an eagerness to sign the center-back, according to the Scottish Sun.

This report describes how Souttar favored a move to Sheffield United or Blackburn, until Rangers’ interest became evident.

The Scottish Sun is now reporting that Rangers are the first to strike a deal for Souttar, despite having had talks with Tony Mowbray in Blackburn over a possible EFL move.

It is claimed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst is just as eager to secure a deal for the defender as Steven Gerrard was before.

Souttar rose through the ranks at Dundee United but made 148 appearances for Hearts and established himself as one of the nation’s top center-backs.

He is also a full Scottish international.

John’s brother Harry is listed at Stoke City in the Championship but is currently injured, leaving Michael O’Neill without the services of one of the division’s most trusted defenders.

The verdict

There was strong interest in England for Souttar, with Sheffield United, Blackburn and even Middlesbrough offering some attractive projects to partner with.

However, the prospect of joining the Rangers is going to be an exciting one for any Scotsman.

It’s a big football club. One of the biggest in Britain when you match everyone up.

The chance to go there and compete for the title, as well as play in Europe, was always going to be difficult for Souttar to turn down if the offer was there.
