International: Burnley’s Nathan Collins on bench as Republic of Ireland silences Cristiano Ronaldo in Dublin

Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy (right) vies with Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo in the Group A soccer match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifying round between Ireland and the Portugal at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on November 11, 2021.

The forward, who marked the Clarets’ equalizer against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend, replaced Jakub Pesek in their 7-0 victory.

The Sparta Prague winger scored two goals for the hosts at the Andrův Stadium in Olomouc – seconds apart on either side of the interval – after Antonin Barak’s opener in the 26th minute.

West Ham United’s Tomas Soucek and Filip Novak extended the lead to five ahead of the hour before Jan Sýkora’s late brace completed the scoring.

Burnley’s Nathan Collins fights for possession with Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane in the Carabao Cup Round of 16 match between Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor on October 27, 2021 in Burnley, England.

Elsewhere, center-back Nathan Collins did not have the opportunity to take on Cristiano Ronaldo at the Aviva Stadium.

The defender was an unused substitute as the Republic of Ireland held leaders Portugal in Group A to a goalless draw in their penultimate World Cup qualifier in Dublin.

Former Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick was also present, giving way to Conor Hourihane just three minutes before the visitors were reduced to 10 men after Pepe was sacked.

Burnley’s Matej Vydra scores his side’s first goal during the Premier League match between Chelsea and Burnley at Stamford Bridge on November 6, 2021 in London, England.
