For 45 minutes it was Burnley at his best

And breathe …

Not because Burnley finally won his first Premier League game of the season. Not because Burnley finally won their first Championship match at Turf Moor since January. But because of the breathtaking and exhilarating 45 minutes against Brentford, it just might have kicked off Burnley’s season.

You can also breathe a sigh of relief for the first two things as they are very important.

It was Burnley at his best. Energetic. Forefoot. Aggressive. Intense. And above all, clinic. It was electric.

Sean Dyche and his coaching staff went out for a meal and a glass of wine to celebrate the ninth anniversary of their stint at the helm on Friday night. Saturday marked the day he arrived in 2012, with a video of congratulatory messages from former players and board members broadcast on the big screen TV ahead of the game.

He was taking charge of his 404th competitive game for the club. There have been some memorable and important games throughout.

He can see Saturday’s 3-1 win over Brentford as one of his most crucial if it is the springboard for another campaign that ends without relegation.

Doubts were starting to set in and rightly so. Burnley started seasons poorly, but nine games without a win to start a campaign was their worst start since 2014-15. On this occasion, it was 10 without a win and they were relegated.

Inside Burnley there was no panic.

There is an eternal belief sewn into the infrastructure Dyche has built since arriving nine years ago. The manager believes in his players. They have already been under pressure and delivered.

Dyche maintained the same position throughout. Press conferences became repetitive, with Burnley’s manager continuing to stress that performances were good.
