Experts demand Chris Wood’s move to Newcastle United, raise key Burnley question

Selling Chris Wood to Newcastle United would be an indication that Burnley has raised the white flag, believes former England stopper Rob Green.

The Magpies have an interest in the Clarets forward and there has been speculation that there was a release clause in his Turf Moor contract.

If that was the case, there was nothing Burnley could do to stop the 30-year-old from moving if he wanted to join Eddie Howe.

But it has not been confirmed that such a clause exists and if it does not, it seems difficult to envision the Clarets accepting an offer unless there is a gigantic offer.

Pundits Green and Chris Sutton believe Wood would be a good signing for the Magpies, but don’t see why Burnley would want to let the star forward go.

“Chris Wood would be a great signing, but if you’re Burnley why the hell or sell Chris Wood unless it’s £ 150million because you want to stay yourself in the Premier League,” said Sutton, speaking on Five Live.

“I don’t really understand that one unless Sean Dyche brings in an absolute super star who would want to go to Burnley at the best of times and they fight in the Premier League. That won’t happen. , I would be shocked.

“Imagine calling Sean Dyche asking to buy Chris Wood, how would that be? “

Green believes Newcastle need to prioritize the Premier League experience over raw potential given the situation they find themselves in.

“You look at someone like Chris Wood and that’s something they (Newcastle) don’t really have and he knows what it’s about,” the former Norwich and West Ham man said.

“He hasn’t scored a million goals this season, but right now you have to bring in the bodies, bring in the experienced heads and the people who will lead people through that.

“If you have young people who are learning the language and coming to you, it’s a new start for them and they’re going to take a long time to find their feet and you just can’t afford it.

“If Burnley sells it it’s kind of a white flag being raised it would leave Burnley fans tasting bitter and you must be really worried.”

And the pair of experts believe that Wood’s possible departure is not the only cause for concern in the ranks of the Clarets.

A 2-1 FA Cup loss to Huddersfield on Saturday was the disappointing latest result in a season that has resulted in just one league win.

With Burnley in what feels like a four-man fight to avoid the downfall, the Clarets must find confidence and results quickly before a key double header at home against Leicester City and Watford.

“We’ve written off Burnley so many times over the course of the seasons,” Sutton said. “Their performances at the start of the season were good, they weren’t getting the results.

“But they lost confidence.”

Green added: “The way Burnley has been this season, the games they’ve played recently and how lacking in confidence they are, only to suffer another loss after taking the lead (against Huddersfield).

“They struggled in front of goal to create chances.

“When it goes bad for Burnley it looks really bad and it hurts really bad and I just think (the cup loss) made it worse.

“It wasn’t much of a surprise.”
