Fylde Coast cricket: Fleetwood and Garstang must wait to celebrate

Garstang effectively clinched his first NPL crown with two games to go by doing light work in Monday’s seven-wicket home win over Leyland.

Second-placed Blackpool recorded a 54-run win at Vernon Road, where the 2021 champions were called out and fired for 222 with three balls remaining.

Blackpool openers shared the best partnership of the day (69) as Tomas King led the way with 44 from 39, nine limits representing 40 of those runs.

The best contribution came from number five Dylan Henshall with 56 of 54, again including nine limits. Lukman Vahaluwala came back 4-79 from 15 overs and Curtis Fletcher 3-50 from 13.3.

St Annes’ response also got off to a good start, with Tom Higson staying firm for 37 balls from 68 in an opening stand of 53.

The hosts looked set for a concerted chase at 99-2, but when top scorer Vahaluwala fell for 41, St Annes were up against him at 134-6.

There were three wickets each for Joshua Boyne, professional Ockert Erasmus and Steve Mercer, who claimed his in just five overs.

As at Blackpool, the home innings ended in 49.3 overs, although St Annes could only total 168.

It took just 23.3 overs for Garstang to chase down Leyland’s 133 and equal Blackpool’s 15 runs that day, retaining their 41 run advantage at the top with just 30 runs to go.

St Annes claimed just three points from their loss but retained fourth place.
