Blackpool 1-2 Bournemouth: Siriki Dembele goal completes Cherries comeback

Siriki Dembele was one of five Bournemouth transfers made on deadline day last month

Siriki Dembele scored a last-gasp winner for Bournemouth, who came from behind to win with two goals down at Blackpool.

Josh Bowler’s superb strike put Blackpool ahead, after striker Dominic Solanke’s penalty was saved by home goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw.

Bournemouth equalized four minutes from time when Todd Cantwell’s ball in the box was deflected past Jamal Lowe, who fired home.

And in the dying moments Dembele, making his full debut, picked up the ball on the right before firing a low shot past Grimshaw.

It cemented the Cherries’ position in second place in the Championship and had back-to-back wins since their embarrassing FA Cup loss to non-league Boreham Wood on Sunday.

But they endured a difficult afternoon, with Solanke unable to score from the spot following Jordan Gabriel’s 27th-minute foul on Jaidon Anthony.

Bowler opened the scoring 10 minutes later when he sent a shot near the edge of the penalty area past goalkeeper Mark Travers and into the top corner of the net.

Scott Parker’s side advanced after the break and their persistence was rewarded with Lowe’s third goal of the season and Dembele’s first since his recent move from Peterborough.

It was tough for Blackpool, who had won their previous three home games. The Tangerines are 14th in the table.

Blackpool head coach Neil Critchley told BBC Radio Lancashire:

“It’s a cruel game sometimes. We led a top team to the end and deserved more from the game.

“I thought it was a very good game of football and I’m so proud of the team. They didn’t deserve this in the end.

“They threatened but I think we controlled most of their game relatively well for long periods of the game.

“This [Bowler’s goal] was a terrific strike and it would have been fitting had that goal won the match.”

Bournemouth head coach Scott Parker told BBC Radio Solent:

“I don’t feel like we broke and caught that at all. I thought from start to finish we were very good.

“I have nothing but compliments for my team for the way they handled the game. We were a constant threat.

“The end of the game, where we get both goals, is a consequence of what we did before that in terms of moving the ball and constant stress.

“At the end of the day, you see that the good teams can make their way. We did everything we could and it worked. It’s a huge result for us.”
