Blackburn Rovers hit by Covid outbreak with player testing positive

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed that a player and staff member have tested positive for Covid-19.

The player in question has reportedly tested positive after the return trip from Bournemouth and had three close contacts.

Of those contacts, two of the players are eligible to feature this weekend as they are fully vaccinated, but the remaining individual will miss this weekend’s game as he is isolating himself for 10 days as he was not vaccinated. . His isolation was imposed despite the return of several negative lateral flow tests.

This means the Rovers will be deprived of two players because of Covid for the game against Birmingham City this weekend.

Scott Wharton, who was substituted in the win over Bournemouth with an upset stomach, is in contention for this weekend’s game with Mowbray dismissing the defender’s illness as Covid-related.

The Rovers have not dealt with a Covid case on the team since November 2020, when Thomas Kaminski was forced to step down from international duties after testing positive.

Two weeks before that, Bradley Johnson and Amari’i Bell were absent in the Rovers’ loss to Reading after showing symptoms of Covid.

The Premier League and the Football League are increasingly concerned about the postponement of matches due to the increase in Covid cases.

Four Premier League games have already been called off while eight Football League matches have been called off, including Preston North End’s meeting with Millwall at The Den.

Rovers’ opponents Birmingham City have struggled with Covid issues for the past 10 days.

However, Bowyer believes his team have survived the worst of their struggles against Covid, with only one player testing positive heading into this weekend’s game.

“We all got tested again today and we had a positive one today and it was youngster Nico (Gordon) who is injured,” Bowyer told Birmingham Live.

“It’s unpredictable, even scientists don’t know what it is sometimes. We take it day by day.

“All we can do is keep doing the right things here, we are strict about what we do, we have good doctors trying to guide us and we are doing a good job right now.”
