12 dead after homes collapse in torrential rains in India

At least 12 people have been killed after houses collapsed during heavy rains in northern India.

The downpour also caused power outages and the flooding of hundreds of homes.

Schools were closed for the day in Lucknow, the state capital of Uttar Pradesh, where the meteorological office recorded 1.4 inches of torrential rain in the past 24 hours, said Brijesh Pathak, deputy chief minister of the state.

The roof and a wall of a dilapidated house collapsed early Friday in the Hazratganj neighborhood of the state capital where workers were sleeping. Nine died at the scene and three others were taken to hospital with injuries, Mr Pathak said.

In Unnao, a town 40 km southwest of Lucknow, three more people were killed when a house collapsed following torrential rain, Mr Pathak said.

Earlier this month, life was disrupted in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru after two days of torrential rain that caused widespread power cuts and heavy flooding that swept away homes and submerged roads.

The two areas that make up the city, Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural, recorded 141% and 114% excess rainfall, making it the wettest September day in eight years.

Monsoon rains in South Asia usually begin in June. But this year, heavy downpours have battered northeast India and Bangladesh from March, causing flooding as early as April in Bangladesh.

The monsoon season that ends in October leaves hundreds dead and tens of thousands homeless every year.

The weather system of the Indian subcontinent is altered due to climate change. Scientists say this makes extreme events such as excessive rainfall the new normal.

With rising global temperatures due to climate change, experts say the monsoon is becoming more variable. Much of the rain that typically falls in a season arrives in a shorter period of time.
